Shasta: The Ibizan Hound June 4, 1998~~October 27, 2010
What's an Ibizan Hound? If you've ever seen pictures of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics or artwork that had dogs in it, you'll have an idea of what an Ibizan {pronounced: uh - bee - zun} looks like. Unfortunately, Egyptian artwork tends to show the Pharaoh Hound which is a little smaller, 'bulkier', and has single-color fur. An Ibizan is gracefully taller, 'thinner', more streamlined, and has two-color fur. In fact, if you've ever seen a drawing of the Egyptian god Anubis {the jackal-headed god of the dead whose Egyptian name is Apnu}, you'll have a better idea, at least, of what an Ibizan's head looks like. And since the Ibizan and Pharaoh hounds have a common heritage, it's not unusual for either one to be mistaken for the other.
Shasta {whose full AKC registered name is Int. CH, UKC GRCH, AKC CH. J-Mark's Shasta of Hemato} is a female Ibizan and was born June 4, 1998. She has been competing in AKC (American Kennel Club) shows in Comformation and, on November 26, 2000, Shasta finished her Championship quest by winning three Best of Breeds and getting the necessary number of points. In October 2001, Shasta was ranked the number 23rd Ibizan Hound in the country (USA). Shasta continues to compete in AKC, UKC, and International dog shows and in lure coursing events. Shasta is also an International Champion as of Feb. of 2006. Shasta finished her UKC Championship on April 9, 2006. She finished her UKC Grand Championship in Dec. of 2007.
